Lares Trek

Our Lares Trek near Cusco doesn't require an Inca Trail pass, so when passes are sold out this is a great alternative tour.  The route travels through multiple Andean communities and probably has the greatest degree of cultural involvement of all our treks.  Most importantly, it is seldom visited and so you will likely see few other visitors while you hike.

We run this trek as an Ala Carte trek, starting and ending in Cusco. A Machu Picchu tour is not included, allowing you to travel to this incredible site on your own before or after the trek.  (We can help you arrange this if you wish.)  For a trek few others are even aware of, the Lares Trek is a great choice for a unique vacation!

DAY 1 :: We will meet you in Cusco early in the morning and transfer to Urubamba town and then on to Chupany, where you will meet your llamas and staff. We start trekking in the direction of Pumahuanca and the archaeological site of La Casa de Tupac Yupanqui, where we eat lunch. In the afternoon, we walk to the community of Paccha, cross a forest of queuña and arrive at our campsite in Cuyoq.

DAY 2 :: After breakfast we hike through the forest of Queñuapata, where we set up our second camp. This day is full of wide open spaces, forests, and mountain views. Our llamas carry our gear and, as on all our treks, our staff rushes ahead to cook lunch on the trail and have tea waiting when you arrive at camp.

DAY 3 :: This day involves a tough ascent up the Vilcanota mountain range. We have lunch and a rest break en route. After lunch we continue on our way, with views of the Yanacocha lagoon. We arrive in the afternoon at the community of Cuncani, our home for the night.

DAY 4 :: We start our long final day, walking through the gorge of Cuncani in the direction of Lares. In Lares we hang up our hiking shoes and have the opportunity to visit the thermal baths before shuttling back to Cusco and the end of our trek.
